A brief history of Hikoi

Hikoi. What all of us do. Everyday.

The name Hikoi was chosen for our first store in Taupo in very quick time. It felt like it chose us and probably did!

In 2001 original Hikoi founders Ron Edwards and Phil Walker felt like it was time for something special in the shoe retailer market. Time to create something unique offering something different from general ‘sports stores’ who mix the white sport shoes and trainers with the outdoor tramping boots and hiking shoes or the tracksuits with the waterproof jackets. They wanted to open a store dedicated to providing customers with quality outdoor footwear and apparel that they could use for basically any outdoor activity here in NZ but also that they could enjoy for travel, safe knowing that their purchase would not let them down.

Right from the start we knew what Hikoi was about. What we wanted it to feel like, look like and represent. Hikoi has always been about creating an experience for our customers. Hikoi stores all have that real NZ feel to them but at the same time an international one too. It’s reflected in the artwork and colours we use, in our logo (the Koru), in the music we play, in the accent you hear as you are being served, the kia ora on the phone, the NZ made clothing and environmentally aware brands we sell, and also in the journey we make.

And so it was. Hikoi Taupo was opened in 2001 and along with the store it is where Hikoi’s head office is located today.

Any Hikoi store wouldn’t be complete without a 3 legged toad. See if you can spot one the next time you are in. Chan Chu sits in the corner and points at the counter. He is mystical and it pays to rub his head from time to time he likes it!
