Some additional sizing guidelines include the following general observations:
- To convert inches to centimeters, multiply inches by 2.54.
- If you are not in the US, or not familiar with US sizing, don't worry. Use the conversion chart above to determine your size.
- For a perfect fit in any type of shoe, you'll want to try them on. In lieu of that, however,measure your foot using the step by step process below, and compare your findings to a specific manufacturer or model of shoe. Don't always assume your shoe size is the same as it always has been. The shape of your feet changes over time.
- Because the foot is three-dimensional, any one or two-dimensional measuring tool can only approximate your true shoe size. Keep in mind that manufacturers use different lasts (forms that create shape) to construct their shoes, and sizing may vary accordingly between and across brands. Many shoes have excellent arch support, but still others leave things to be desired. Take into account your specific needs, if any, for arch support inserts or innersoles (insoles).
- Measure both feet. If your feet are different sizes, it is recommended that you purchase the size that accommodates the longer and wider of your feet. It is recommended that you stand upright, if possible, when using the measurement chart. This is because you can more accurately gauge how your foot shape distributes your weight. Although it is not true for everybody, in many cases, the larger foot is the opposite of that person's dominant hand (e.g., right-handed, left-footed).
Depending on your intended uses, what you choose to wear inside your footwear is sometimes just as important as the footwear itself. This will inevitably influence your sizing requirements. Keep in mind that depending on the type of footwear you're considering, you may elect to wear socks. As a result, take into consideration what kind of socks you will be wearing (for example, thick versus thin, wool versus cotton, standard versus wicking). When you measure your foot, wear the socks you'll wear with your new shoes.
Some materials, such as non-waterproofed leathers, may shrink when subjected to prolonged exposure to weather elements, water, and other excess water sources, such as snow and ice. Determine in advance whether you need to take a step up to the next level of technical products, namely, footwear constructed from either water-resistant or waterproof materials.

Should you be deterred from wearing athletic shoes of the opposite gender? Absolutely not; in all but a few cases, sizing is comparable if simple guidelines are followed.
How do I convert men's to women's shoe sizes? Generally, converting men's to women's shoe sizes is an easy-to-remember rule of thumb. We suggest that you should subtract approximately one-and-one-half sizes from your US women's size to find the appropriate shoe in US men's size. For example, if you wear a size 9 US in women's shoes, you would most likely need a size 7.5 US in men's shoes.
Vice versa, men would add approximately one-and-one-half shoe sizes to women's sizing in order to determine the proper fit. For example, if you wear a size 9 US in men's shoes, you would most likely need a size 10.5 US in women's shoes.
You should not be afraid to purchase footwear online. When making decisions based on experience, be armed with your knowledge of your own feet, your specific sporting activities, your own personal tendencies, and overall, good, practical judgment. This way, you can greatly minimize the chances that you will have any difficulties with regards to size. Fear, in the case of buying shoes online, is rather silly, exaggerated and wisely dismissed.
Measuring your feet.
Step 1. First gather your supplies. Some tape, a piece of paper larger than your foot, a pencil, and a ruler or measuring tape. Taping the piece of paper, at the corners, to a flat, hard surface on floor. Now you're ready to measure.
Step 2. Trace the outline of your foot. Some people have feet that do swell especially in the evening after standing on them for long periods of time. Because of this we recommend measuring your foot in the evening to allow for comfort and ample room. Trace your feet without shoes, just with socks like you may be wearing with the shoes you will be buying. Place foot firmly on the floor with your leg slightly forward and your shin just in front of your ankle. Using your pencil, trace the outline of your foot on the paper. Hold your pencil straight up and down as you do this. Make sure the pencil is firmly against your foot as you trace around it. It can be helpful to have someone else do the tracing, but you can do this yourself.
Step 3. Marking the length and width of your foot. Using your pencil, draw a straight line from top to bottom of the outline of your foot. That is your length. Then from side to side at the widest part of the outline, draw another straight line for your width.
Step 4. Measuring the length of your foot. Using your measuring tape or ruler, measure from the bottom to the top of your outline. For inches use the closest 16th inch mark when measuring. Don't round up or down as this will affect the fit of new shoes. Write your length measurement at the top of the outline.
Step 5. Measuring the width of your foot. Some people will need a narrow shoe while others need wide shoe. Measure the width of your foot with your tape measure or ruler from left side to the right of the widest part of the outline. Find the mark that is to the closest 16th inch here as well. Write this number to the side of your foot outline.
Step 6. Finding your final shoe size. Repeat these steps for the other foot and go with the larger of the two. After your numbers are written down, you will want to subtract 2 tenths of an inch from each of the numbers to allow for the slight space between your actual foot and the line made when tracing your foot with the pencil. These final numbers are your actual foot measurements and can be converted to your appropriate size and width.

Certain conditions can apply
General Shoe Care.
Shoes should be periodically cleaned using warm, clean water and allowed to dry naturally (as opposed to dry by placing next to a heat source). Leather shoes should not be force-dried as it will encourage the leather to crack.
You may wish to apply waterproofing and/or conditioning products and there are many available. Some of these products and their recommended uses are follows.
Synthetic wax(Dubin); Best applied with the fingers as the finger warmth makes it easier to apply. Synthetic wax is often solvent based and can be corrosive on stitching for this reason it is best used on thick (2.5mm) full grained leather uppers with little or no seam work ie tramping boots or full grained leather outdoor walking shoes.
Liquid repellents (Leather conditioners); Most liquid repellents are water based and best suited to most fashion leather footwear. Most come with an applicator brush and do not have to be 'forced' into the stitching of the shoe. Leather conditioners often need to be reapplied on footwear more often than synthetic waxes.
If your shoes get really wet on the inside then we recommend stuffing them with newspaper to draw any water out of the liner while the leather is drying. The newspaper should be replaced periodically.
Caring for nubuck or suede leather
These leathers should both be dried in a similar fashion to ordinary leather shoes but to clean, wash with warm, mildly soapy water using a soft bristled brush. While still damp (as opposed to wet or dry) apply a liquid repellent like Liquid Nikwax.
Caring for fabric shoes.
Care of fabric, canvas or nylon mesh shoes.
Use a soft soap product and a soft bristled brush to scrub off surface dirt. Canvas and nylon mesh can be gently washed down with water and a clean cloth, but do not soak or immerse in water. Dry away from direct heat. Please be aware that white mesh is difficult to restore to a brand new look.
